How can one $100 amount support different priorities without pretending every choice is possible?

A fictional $100 can do several useful things, but it cannot do all of them at once. Begin with the amount available: 10,000 cents. Then name three purposes it could support, such as fun today, a goal, and a cushion. Assigning money is not about finding one perfect split. It is about making the limits and possibilities visible. You may use the fictional amount even if you do not currently earn or manage money.
Each dollar can be assigned only once. If $40 goes to fun today, those same 4,000 cents cannot also go toward a goal. That is a trade-off. After you choose, identify the one option you would have chosen next. That single next-best alternative is the opportunity cost. It is not a list or the sum of every imaginable thing you could buy.
Compare complete plans by checking that each totals exactly $100, then explain what changed. A larger goal amount may reach a deadline sooner. A larger today amount may support time with friends. A larger cushion may leave more flexibility. None of those results proves good character. The numbers simply reveal which possibilities each plan keeps open.
Your circumstances can change, so a useful plan can change too. The skill is to start with the actual amount, assign it honestly, check the total, and explain one trade-off. If the total is below $100, some money remains unassigned. If it is above $100, the plan is not yet possible and must never appear as a valid full split.
Worked example
Fictional Split A assigns $40.00 to fun today, $40.00 to a goal, and $20.00 to a cushion: 4,000 + 4,000 + 2,000 = 10,000 cents. Split B assigns $25.00, $55.00, and $20.00: 2,500 + 5,500 + 2,000 = 10,000 cents. Split B moves $15.00 from today to the goal. It may reach the goal sooner; Split A keeps $15.00 more for current plans. Neither is automatically better. If the weekend event was what you would have chosen next, that event—not every possible purchase—is the opportunity cost of moving the $15.00.
